Equinox was formed in January of 1989, when keyboardist/vocalist, Jamison Masters was introduced to drummer Eric Althaus through a mutual acquaintance. The two played together in a band called ‘SPIRITS’ for the next few months. In may of 1989, the guitar and bass players of ‘Spirits’ decided to go their separate ways, leaving Jamison and Eric to continue their mutual musical goals.
In June of 1989, Eric introduced Jamison to guitarist Lonnie
Melland. Eric had played with Lonnie in a funk fusion band, ‘Renaissance
13’, just prior to joining forces with Jamison months earlier. Jamison and
Lonnie hit it off right away, and the first creatively productive lineup of the
band was formed. The threesome began on what would come to be a two year
writing binge. There were also several live performances during the
writing process, between 1989 and 1991. Due to the fact that the three could not
find the right bass player to compliment the talents of the others, ‘Spirits’
decided to get into a recording studio, and demo their music. In the Fall
of 1991, they started recording demos at a small studio in Minneapolis. It
was a very productive experience, as many of the songs made it onto their future
album “Color Of The Time”.
In August of 1992, ‘Spirits’ entered Logic Recording Studio, and
recorded a demo version of “Believe”, just to determine if Logic was going to be
a creative recording atmosphere for the group. It proved to be, and in
September, 1992, ‘Spirits’ began recording the actual tracks that would make it
onto the album. Because the band were recording on their own finances, the
recording process took two years. They would record for a week or two, and
then run out of money, so they’d have to go save up again, and then get back in
the studio and start the cycle all over.
In late 1994, the album “Color Of The Time” was completed, and
the band had replaced their name of ‘Spirits’, with EQUINOX. The band
released a limited number of copies of “Color…” to their friends and families,
but the official release was not until May of 1995. EQUINOX created their
own record label, Opus Recordings, and released the album worldwide through
distribution outlets they had made arrangements with. Album sales immediately
took off - especially in Europe and Asia. As EQUINOX began to amass popularity, Jamison, Eric, and Lonnie were
rapidly on their way to becoming more than just a struggling independent band...
